WHAT IS RIGHTEOUSNESS ?

The Following Study Article Is Composed From Preliminary Study Notes As I Progressively Step Through A Biblical Word Study On “The Cornerstone”. All References Are To The KJV.

Righteousness is the word of the Lord (see Ps. 119:23, Heb 5:13 ); it is in all the words of the mouth of the Lord ( see Pro. 8:8); and it is the testimonies of the Lord (see Ps. 119:144).

It is the holy commandment ( see 2 Peter 2:21) ; and it is all the commandments of the Lord ( see Ps 119:172).

It is the law of the Lord ( see Ps 119:142, Isa 45:23, Isa 51:7 )  ; and it is in the law ( see Phl 3:6) .

It is composed of precepts ( see Ps 119:40) .

It is the way of the Lord ( see Psalm 5:8) ; it is the way of the Lord’s steps ( see Ps 85:13) ; and in its way is life ( see Pro 12:28) .

In its pathway there is no death ( see Pro 12:28); it is every good path ( see Pro 2:9);  and in it is great goodness ( see Ps 145 :7) .

Righteousness is the (a) name of the Lord ( see Ps 143:11); and it is our LORD ( see Isa 51:1, Jer 23:6, Jer 33:16 ,  Zep 2:3 ).

It is truth ( see  1 Ki 3:6, Ps 45:4, Ps 85:11, Pro 12:17, Isa 48:1,Jer 4:2, Zech 8:8 ) ; it is the Lord’s truth ( see Psalm 40:10, Ps 96:13);  and it is to speak truth in the heart  ( see Ps 15:2).

It is right ( see Pro 16:8); and it is things that are right ( see Isa 45:19) .

It is uprightness ( see Ps 11:7) ; it is to walk uprightly ( see Ps 15:2) ; it is uprightness of heart ( see Deut 9:5, 1 Ki 3:6, Job 8:6, Ps 11:7);  and it is to do no wrong (see Jer 22:3 ) .

Righteousness produces the fruit of judgment (see Amo 6:12 ); it is judgment ( see Job 29:14, Psalm 9:8, Ps 33:5 , Ps 72:2, Ps 97:2, Ps 103:6, Ps 106:3, Pro 2:9, Pro 8:20, Ecc 3:16, Isa 1:27, Isa 5:7, Isa 5:16, Isa 16:5, Isa 28:17, Isa 32:16 , Isa 33:5  , Isa 56:1, Jer 4:2,  Jer 9:24 , Jer 22:3 , Jer 33:15,  Hos 2:19 , Amo 5:7, Amo 5:24 , Mic 7:9 , Act 24:25  ); it is the judgments of God ( see Ps 72:1, Isa 26:9) ; it is upright judgment ( see Ps 58:1) ; and it is His upright judgment (see Psalm 9:8) .

It is justice ( see Isa 56:1) ; and it is justification of life ( see Rom 5:18) .

It is laid to the plumb line ( see Isa 28:17) .

It is equity ( see Ps 98:9, Ps 99:4, Pro 2:9, Isa. 11:4 ).

It is counsel ( see Isa 1:26).

It is light ( see Isa 58:8, Mic 7:9, 2 Co 6:14) .

Righteousness establishes the throne of kings ( see Pro 16:12); it is the habitation of the Lord’s throne (see Ps 97:2) ; it is the kingdom of God ( see Heb 1:8) ; and it dwells within the new heavens and a new earth ( see 2 Peter 3:13 ) .

It is a peacemaker ( see Ps 72:3) ; it works or produces peace ( see Isa 32:17, Isa 48:18 ) ; it is peace ( see Heb 7:2) ; it is peace in the Holy Ghost ( see Rom 14:17 ) ; and it effects quietness and assurance ( see Isa 32:17) .

It is to shed no innocent blood ( see Jer 22:3)  ; it is to do no violence to the stranger, fatherless , nor the widow ( see Jer 22:3);  it is to not swear deceitfully ( see Psalm 24:4) ; and it is to deliver the spoiled out of the hand of the oppressor ( see Jer 22:3).

It is meekness ( see Ps 45:4, Zep 2:3 ); it is submission to God (see Rom 10:3); and it is to not lift up your soul unto vanity ( see Ps 24:4) .

It is temperance ( see Act 24:25 ); and it is health ( see Isa 58:8).

It is to seek the Lord ( see Hos 10:12) ; it is a thing in which the LORD delights ( see Jer 9:24).

Our righteousness is only obtained if we observe to do all the commandments before the Lord our God ( see Deut 6:25) ; it is obedience ( see Rom 6:16); it is the result of hearkening to the commandments of God (see  Isa 48:18); it is effected by seeking God and His ordinances of justice daily and delighting to approach God and know His ways ( see Isa 58:2) ; and it is to forsake not the ordinance of God ( see Isa 58:2) .  

It is honorable and glorious work ( see Ps 111:3) ; and it is durable honor ( see Pro 8:18).

It delivers from death in the day of wrath ( see Pro 10:2, Pro 11:4 ) .

It is holiness ( see Luke 1:75, Acts 13:10, Romans 6:19, Eph 4:24 ).

It is purity ( see Job 8:6) ; and it is a pure heart (see Ps 24:4).

Our righteousness is the cleanness of our hands ( see 2 Sa 22:21, Ps 18:20, Ps 18:24 , Ps 24:4) ; it is our clean hands ( see Ps 24:4) ; it is our cleanness in the LORD ‘s eyesight ( see 2 Sa 22:25, Ps 18:24)  ; and it our righteousness is according to the integrity within us ( see Psalm 7:8 )

Our righteousnesses are all as an unclean thing, as filthy rags ( see Is 64:6 )

God’s righteousness is the work of the LORD our God ( see Jer 51:10) ; it is fulfilled in us by God’s own Son ( see Rom 8:4) ; it is the glory of the LORD ( see Ps 97:6, Isa 62:2, Isa 58:8), and it belongs to the Lord ( see Dan 9:7) .

God’s righteousness is salvation ( see Ps 98:2, Ps 119:23, Isa 45:8, Isa 51:5 , Isa 51:6, Isa 56:1 , Isa 61:10,  Isa 62:1  )  ; and it is the Lord’s salvation ( see Ps 40:10, Isa 46:13 ) .

God’s righteousness was reckoned or accounted or imputed to Abraham by faith ( see Rom 4:9, Gal 3:6, James 2:23  ); it is accounted or imputed to all those who believe in the Lord (see Gen 15:6, Rom 4:11); it is a blessing imputed by God to the believer in Christ without the works of that believer ( see Rom 4:6); it is accounted to those that believe on him that justifies the ungodly ( see Rom 4:5) .

It is God’s right hand ( see Isa 41:10) ; it is in God’s right hand ( see Psalm 48:10 ) ; it is brought to us by the interceding arm of the Lord ( see Isa 59:16) ; and it is sustained in us by the interceding arm of the Lord ( see Isa 59:16) .

It is the righteousness of God which is by and through the faith of Christ ( see Phl 3:9)

It is by faith in Jesus Christ to all and upon all who believe (see Rom 3:22 Rom 4:13, Rom 9:30 Heb 11:7);  and it is fulfilled in Christ to every believer ( see Rom 10:4) .

It is not through the works of the law ( see Rom 4:13) ; it is not attained by the works of the law ( see Rom 9:31, 32) ; it is not by the works which we have done ( see Tit 3:5) ; and it is not our own righteousness which is of the law ( Phl 3:9)

It is obtained through belief within a man’s heart (see Romans 10:10) ; it is obtained through confession with the mouth ( see Rom 10:10) ; and it is the sacrifices of trusting in the Lord ( see Psalm 4:5) .

It is the Lord’s faithfulness ( see 1 Sa 26:23, Isa 1:26, Isa 11:5 , Psalm 40:10 , Psalm 143:1), and it is His loving kindness ( see Jer 9:24, Hos 2:19, Ps 36:10, Ps 40:10) .

It is mercy ( see Hos 2:19, Hos 10:12); and it is to show mercy to the poor ( see Dan 4:27);  it is the mercy of the LORD upon them that fear Him ( see Ps 103:17) ; and it is by His mercy, by the washing of regeneration and the renewing of the Holy Ghost ( see Tit. 3:5).

God’s righteousness is an abundance of grace ( see Rom 5:17, Gal 2:21) ; it is a free gift ( see Rom 5:17) ; it is given to the upright in heart ( see Ps 36:10) ; it is given to those that know God ( see Ps 36:10) ; and it is a heritage of the servants of the LORD which is of the Lord ( see Isa 54:14).

God’s righteousness causes spiritual life to those Christ is within ( see Rom 8:10) ; it is joy in the Holy Ghost ( see Rom 14:17) ;  it is from generation to generation ( see Isa 51:8) ; and it endures forever ( see Ps 111:3, Ps 119;142, Ps 119:144, Isa 51:8 , 2 Co 9:9 ) .

It is the fine, clean and white linen array of the saints ( see Rev 19:8 ) .
